Thimphu, Paro and Punakha Tour Overview

Nub Tshonapata trekking trail takes you through rich forest of flora and fauna offering breathtaking views of the giant Himalayan Mountain peaks looping at the valley head. The turquoise colour Nub Tshona Pata Lake is the highlight of the trek. The legendary tale that surrounds Nub Tsonapata lake that connects with a cymbal, a tressure of Paro Ripong Dzong remains exhilarating. To this day the cymbal is played once during every Paro Tshechu. The entire trail offers magnificent landscape, breathtaking views of the Himalayan peaks.

This trekking program includes 2 days cultural sightseeing in Paro and Thimphu as it is a case of when you are already here why not visit some important places of Bhutan.

Thimphu, Paro and Punakha Tour Itinerary

Day 1
The Druk Air flight into Paro is a befitting introduction to the spectacular beauty of our country. In clear weather, magnificent views of the world’s highest peaks, give way to the lush green Paro valley as you land. On arrival at Paro airport, you will be received by our representative and will escort you to the hotel. In the afternoon visit Ta Dzong, an ancient watchtower, which now houses the National Museum. Below the museum is the Paro Rimpung Dzong, the center of civil and religious authority in this valley. A short walk takes you to the base of the dzong and across a traditional cantilevered, covered bridge. Night halt stays at the hotel in Paro
Day 2
Distance: 6.5 km (Round trip)
Time: 3 to 5 hours
Altitude: 3100m

Right after breakfast drive towards the road point to Taktshang. Taktshang Monastery stands at 900m above the Paro valley floor and it was wonderfully built on the face of a high cliff. As you look upon the monastery from down below it appears impossible to reach. At a normal pace it can take about 2 hours but you will find it’s a life time journey all the way up to the monastery and then inside the monastery which you will find yourself into taking more times. Taktshang means “Tiger’s Nest,” so named when Guru Rimpoche flew to the site of the monastery on the back of a flying tigres in 8th century. This day hike is not only historically and culturally interesting, but also incredibly scenic.

Afternoon drive to Haa via Chelela Pass (3980m) which is the highest road pass in Bhutan. In the evening you start sorting and packing your trekking equipment for the next day. You can pack those things that you don’t need on the trek separately and keep them with your driver. Overnight stays at the hotel in Haa.
Day 3
Distance: 14km Time: 5-6 hours
Ascent: 230m
Descent: 60m
Camp Alt: 2870m

Today your trek begins with a gentle climb up the Talela Pass at 3780m through a thick forest of rhododendron and conifer trees. You will continue ascending gradually to a yak herders’ camp at Tshojo. Climb up further to Gochula pass, which is at 4200m. After this pass, walk through the trail following a ridge and then descend gradually to our camp at Womji
Day 4
Distance: 22km
Time: 7-8 hours
Ascent: 690m
Camp Alt:3750M

Start your trek by climbing steeply through juniper and rhododendron forest to the Gochhila pass at 4350m, providing spectacular views of the whole Tshejala range. You will continue walking to Tshejalum passing through several yak herders’ camps and in spring the trail will be carpeted with wild flowers. You will then walk towards Tshejala pass crossing the ancient trade route from Haa to Tibet.
Day 5
You will spend the day by enjoying the area around this sacred lake, visiting the yak herders’camp and seeing golden trout or exploring the surrounding hillsides.
Day 6
Distance: 19km
Time: 6-7 hours
Ascent: 855m

You will retrace as far as to Gochhila Pass. From the pass take a different route over a ridge to Lake Tsojo at 3780m. You will have a picnic lunch on the lake shore. After lunch, you will descend to the camp in a yak meadow at Tsojo.
Day 7
Distance: 10km
Time: 3-4 hours
Ascent: 660m
Descent: 660m

The last day’s trail descends gradually through juniper and rhododendron forest until you reach the Talila Pass. Crossing the pass, you will re-enter the Haa Valley. Your trek ends here and your transport will be waiting here to take you to Thimphu. Overnight in Thimphu, altitude 2360m.
Day 8
Thimphu: 2360m, Punakha: 1500m

In the morning, we will explore Bhutan’s capital city Thimphu through Takin Sanctuary, Folk Heritage Museum, School of Arts and Crafts, Biggest Buddha statute and Trashichho Dzong. After sightseeing in Thimphu (2360m), we will drive to Punakha (74km, about 2.5h) via Dochula Pass. Later, at Lobesa walk through rice fields and passing by clusters of farm house to reach the fertility Temple founded by Divine Mad man.

Day 9
In the morning hike to Khamsum Yueley Namgyal Chorten and visit Punakha Dzong. Cool breeze walking on the country’s longest suspension bridge over Phochu about few minutes away from the Dzong is not to be missed. Later stroll in Kuruthang town for some time and have lunch there.
In the afternoon drive back to Paro. (115km, about 4hrs).
Day 10
Your guide and driver will drive to you to Paro airport for your onward departure.
