Thimphu, Paro and Wangdue Phodrang Tour Overview

Performed at Jambay Lhakhang, an 8th century monastery, this festival spotlights several exciting dances. Mewang, the fire ceremony, is a unique dance performed under flames where crowds walk through a gate of huge fireworks as a means to drive away evil spirits. When night falls, we mingle amongst the locals to witness the Tercham which translates to ‘Treasure Dance’. This dance is the main feature of the festival where masked dancers dance naked at the outskirts of the monastery to purify sins and augur a good harvest.

Thimphu, Paro and Wangdue Phodrang Tour Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive Paro and sightseeing ( Altitude: 2334 m.)

Your guide and driver will receive you at the Paro International airport.

In the afternoon, visit to the Ta dzong, the national museum of Bhutan. Then visit Rinpung dzong built in 1646 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the administrative centre of Paro district.

In the evening, free to stroll in the town for shopping and photography.

Dinner and overnight in hotel.

Day 2

Paro â€“ Bumthang sightseeing ( By Flight - 25 minutes, Altitude: 2600 m.)

Meet & greet at the Badbalathang airport. Well come to Bumthang, the spiritual land of Bhutan.

In the afternoon, visit to:

Jakar dzong built in 1667 by Nagi Wangchuk.
Tamshing lhakhang (Temple of the good message), established in 1501 by Pema Lingpa.
Kurjey lhakhang, where you can see the body print of Guru Rinpoche.
Kencho Sum lhakhang.
Dinner and overnight in Hotel.

Day 3

Bumthang sightseeing ( Altitude: 2600 m.)

After early breakfast, drive to Tang valley. On the way, visit Mebar tsho or “The burning lake”.Terton Pema Lingpa discovered the treasures hidden by Guru Rinpoche in the 14th century in this lake, also called “The burning lake”.

While in Tang valley, visit to the Ogen Choling palace museum.

In the evening, drive back to Bumthang.

Day 4

Bumthang â€“ Witness Jambay Lhakhang Singye Cham festival

After Breakfast, Witness The Jambay Lhakhang Singye Cham Festival (Full Day).

In the evening, explore Bumthang town. Dinner and overnight in Hotel.

Day 5

Bumthang â€“ Trongsa â€“ Gangtey ( 185 Km, Drive: 5 hours, Alti: 3000 m.)

In the morning, drive to Gangtey. On the way, visit to:

Trongsa dzong built in 1648 by Chogyal MinjurTempa. Both the 1st and 2nd King ruled the country from this ancient seat.
Ta dzong, the royal heritage museum.
In the afternoon, visit to Gangtey Gompa monastery founded in 1613 by Gyaltse Pema Thinley, the grandson of Pema Lingpa. After visiting the monastery do Gangay Nature trail hike, the best way to explore Phobjekha valley.

In the evening, visit crane information center and learn about the crane and its connection with Phobjekha valley.

Day 6

Gangtey â€“ Punakha sightseeing ( 75 Km, Drive: 2 hours, Alti: 1242 m.)

In The Morning, Visit Wangdue Phodrang Dzong Built In 1638 By Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal.Then visit Chimi lhakhang, also called “the temple of fertility” built in 1499 by Lama Drukpa Kuenley, whowas popularly known as “The divine madman.He travelled throughout Bhutan and Tibet using songs and humor to spread his teachings of salvation. Your guide can share so many tales of Divine mad man.It takes about 20minute walk through rice fields and a small village to the monastery. The childless couples from across the country visit the temple to offer prayer and seek blessings. This monument is also the highlight of honeymoon in Bhutan.

In the afternoon, take a scenic drive to Talo village where you can meet some local people. On the way back visit a Nunnery where you might catch a prayer ceremony going on. From here, you will find beautiful view below.

Day 7

Punakha â€“ Thimphu sightseeing ( 76 Km, Drive: 3 hours, Alti: 2334 m.)

In the morning, hike to the beautiful KhamsumYulley Namgyal Choling monastery. It is three storied tall and is 30 meters in height built by Her Majesty the Queen Tshering Yangdon Wangchuck. Later visit the majestic Punakha dzong built in 1637 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgy. Punakha dzong is the winter residence of Je Khenpo and the monk body.Then walk 10 minutes towards phochu river to walk on the Bhutan’s longest suspension bridge.

Afternoon, continue your journey to Thimphu. On the way, visit Dochula pass with 108 stupas and on clear days you will see clear view of higher Himalayas towards north.

Drive for another 30 minutes you will be in Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan. It’s the biggest urban center of Bhutan and one will find it more busy with more people, more cars, and many buildings. But it’s a beautiful city, quite and calm not much hassle. You can explore Thimphu on foot in the main streets, walk in the beautiful parks and later visit a karaoke to drink some Bhutanese drinks and meet people.

Day 8

Thimphu sightseeing ( Altitude: 2334 m.)

In The Morning, Visit To:

National memorial chorten (1974) built in honor of late His Majesty Jigme Dorji Wangchuck.
Tallest statue of sitting Buddha at KuenselPhodrang (51.5m).
Changangkhalhakhang, the oldest temple in Thimphu valley built in the 13th century by Lama PhajoDrugomShigpo.
Takin preserve center (Takin is the national animal of Bhutan). The Bhutanese believe that this animal was created by Lama Drukpa Kuenley, the divine madman of Bhutan.
Sangay gang view point from where you can see the beautiful view of Thimphu valley below.
Dupthoplhakhang one of the few surviving nunneries in Bhutan.
In the afternoon, witness archery match at Changlimithang stadium.

In the evening, free to stroll in the town for shopping and photography.

Day 9

Thimphu â€“ Paro - Tigerâ€™s nest hike (77 km, Drive: 1 hr. 20 mins,Hike: 4 hr.)

After Early Breakfast, drive to Paro. On The Way, Visit Tamchog Monastery builtiIn 1420 By Thang Tong Gyalpo. He Built 108 Bridges Across Tibet and Bhutan, Out of Which 8 Were Built In Bhutan.

Hike to the iconic Tiger’s nest monastery (Paro Taktsang). The primary temple was built around Guru Rinpoche’s meditation cave. This temple is probably the most photographed monument in Bhutan. The monument is a world heritage site and is the highlight of the trip. This hiking trail is also a part of the beautiful Bumdra trek in Paro valley.

In the afternoon, visit Drugyal dzong built in 1647 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. The dzong served as a defense post against the Tibetan invasions in the ancient times. It was destroyed by an accidental fire and was in ruins until recently.

Then visit Kichulhakhang built in 659 A.D by the Tibetan king SrongtsenGampo. He built 108 temples in a single day to pin the ogress to the earth forever.
